If you need help with understanding welder certification, start here.
There are many misconceptions about the process and the “authorities” vary widely. The term “Welder Certification” can mean many things to many people. In this post, I hope to address some key points to consider about “WHO” you can have certify your welders. This even applies to individual welders. The information in this post is in the context of the US. Other countries have different codes, standards and requirements.
Who can test and certify your welders?
- Whoever is authorized by your requirements.– Most requirements are references to various industry codes and standards but some may impose other restrictions. Each code/specification may have its own rules. If you are an individual and just want to refer to yourself as a “Certified Welder” you could even test yourself…but understand that may be questioned. (Video the entire process maybe?)
- Most codes and standards in the US DO NOT REQUIRE A CWI . It may be listed as an option for inspector qualification but in most cases is not what is required for welder testing. The exception is the AWS certified Welder program which is testing at an AWS ATF. (I am an ATF but understand that may not be what you require, I’m not here to sell you that…just serve it if needed)
- Most codes and standards in the US DO NOT REQUIRE AN OUTSIDE PARTY. As a matter of “normal practice, most codes and standards in the US primarily indicate the company performing the welding has the responsibility and duty to perform their own welder qualification testing and subsequent “certification” when needed. In some cases such as ASME Sec IX, outside parties are not authorized to supervise and administer the performance qualification tests. Outside parties can perform inspections and other tasks. Check out the ASME Interpretations tool on Their Website
In summary, you do NOT have to have an outside party test and certify your welders. In some cases its allowed. In some cases it is restricted.
